A British curriculum reflects our international approach

We are proud to teach the British National Curriculum here at GEMS Cambridge International School, Kampala. We're passionate about the opportunities the British curriculum has to offer our students, and thrilled to teach a curriculum which can open doors to so many prestigious higher education establishments all over the world.

Balance, creative thinking & measurability

The British curriculum is taught in over 150 countries all over the world. But what is it that makes a British curriculum school in Kampala such a good fit for your child?

•Balance & a wide-angle view
With a liberal approach and a wide-angle view of subjects from history to religion, the British curriculum is perfect for giving your child a well-rounded, modern view of the world, wherever they study. Covering all major science, arts and humanities subjects, this curriculum is perfect for developing well-informed students with a balanced view of the world they live in.

•Creativity & critical thinking
This curriculum is excellent at teaching children to think for themselves. Our teachers work hard to encourage open debate and discussion among students, helping them develop their own beliefs and express their opinions with clarity and confidence. Embracing creativity both in artistic expression and individual thought is another cornerstone of this outstanding system.

•Measurability & progress checking
The British National Curriculum has a very clear, detailed framework which provides everyone involved with a clear map of the student's progress. This helps them to stay on course and achieve their personal goals.

The British curriculum with an international flavour

As respected and effective as the British curriculum may be, we don't teach our students in a bubble. Proudly located in tranquil Butabika, we ensure all our pupils have a sophisticated understanding of the country, continent and world around them.

Also known as Foundation Stage (FS), we enrol children aged 3 to 5 (Key Stage 1) on the British curriculum. At this early stage we concentrate on key aspects of your child's learning journey such as:

•Keeping track of progress
Monitoring and assessing each student's development against age appropriate performance standards

•Supporting growth
Encouraging and helping children to reach their full potential, whatever their natural aptitudes

•Developing social skills
Helping our young people as they develop the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to interact effectively in a complex and changing world

•Introducing education
Familiarising youngsters with reading, writing, science, mathematics and IT through practical tasks and playtime activities

•Exploring our world
From carefully structured play to regular field trips, we encourage an active interest in the world around us

By the end of Key Stage 1, year 2, we aim to have developed young pupils with a love of learning, basic literacy and numeracy, effective social skills and the ability to read and write. At this level, our students have a wide world view, with a growing knowledge of history, geography and science. Our year 2 pupils will also have discovered creative outlets for their ideas, feelings and beliefs; from dance and gymnastics to art and music.

Key Stage 2 & Key Stage 3

This is the learning period described by our British school in Kampala as “middle school”. Our middle school students will build on the foundations laid by Foundation and Key Stage 1, with increasingly advanced teaching which focuses on:

•Measuring achievement
Undertaking ongoing assessments to make sure your child's progress is continuous and at the level expected for their age group

•Encouraging initiative
We help our students learn actively, share their ideas, think independently and involve themselves in the learning process

•Teaching core subjects
We dig deeper into English, mathematics, science and IT

•Introducing languages
The earlier your child starts learning foreign languages, the more proficient they will become. We introduce languages at a very early stage

•Enhancing creativity & social skills
Our pupils study art, music and practice a diverse range of sports alongside personal, social and health education

•Engaging in extra-curricular activities
From drama and choir, to computer club and art classes, we encourage our pupils to challenge themselves and explore their passions outside class time

•Developing IT skills
Our pupils benefit from our outstanding IT facilities and can undertake extra Microsoft IT qualifications

•Nurturing leadership qualities
We give all of our students the chance to take on classroom responsibilities and leadership roles to encourage co-operation, accountability and teamwork

By the time your child has reached year 6, the final year of Key Stage 2, we hope to have helped to develop a student with a good character, the ability to articulate themselves clearly, confidence in their abilities, a broad world view and all the skills they need to embark on their secondary education.

This secondary education begins in year 7, Key Stage 3. At this stage, your child will begin studying familiar subjects in more depth. The Key Stage 3 curriculum includes: English language, English literature, mathematics, history, geography, religion, the sciences, computer science, a selection of second languages, art and design, physical education (PE) and personal, social and health education.
