Learning Support Programme
The Özel Bilkent Schools are situated on the campus of Bilkent University, one of Turkey's leading institutions of higher learning, and enjoy the university's pleasant and safe environment. The schools are proud of their commitment to the continuous learning, development and professionalism of their teaching staff, the majority of whom hold higher degrees (MA or PhD), plus teaching certificates. A significant part of the curriculum is taught in English and students can expect to graduate as proficient users of English. In addition, both French and German are taught in the schools and can be taken as core or elective subjects. Admission is based on random selection for Prekindergarten and Kindergarten, and on performance in special entrance exams from Grade 1 onwards. Once accepted to the schools, students can expect to enjoy a student/staff ratio of 8: 1, and class sizes of 22 in PreK-8, and 18 or fewer in higher grades.
Creativity, problem-solving, understanding of different cultures and familiarity with modern technology are core concerns in the pedagogical approach employed by the schools, which aspire to instil a healthy balance of assertiveness, competitiveness and cooperation in its students as well as enhance students' initiative, self-esteem, self-discipline and social responsibility.
Great emphasis is also given to extra-curricular activities which include a range of areas covering drama, art, music, sports and foreign languages. The school's location on campus allows children to benefit from the University’s facilities such as the library, theatres, music school, sports areas, and computing. Children are encouraged to consider themselves part of the wider academic community in which they go to school and to learn the values of academic life and success.
The schools follow an enhanced Turkish national education curriculum, and also offer IB programmes. The Özel Bilkent High School was designated an IB World School in November, 2008, and embarked on its first IB Diploma programme in September 2009. The Primary School was designated as a PYP Candidate School from January 2009 and is working towards full-authorization for the coming year. In September 2010 the school will welcome its first pre-kindergarten class in purpose-built facilities.
