Learning Support Programme
The International School of Tanganyika, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is a private, non-profit, co-educational day school offering English Language medium schooling for students aged three to 19 years. It is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the parents. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students from the international community of Dar es Salaam.
The programme of studies maintains academic standards comparable to those in other large international schools and in the national schools of Europe and North America. There are 120 fully qualified teachers from 18 countries. IST is assisted by the Office of Overseas Schools of the US Department of State and is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. IST enrols 1, 040 students, representing 55 nationalities.
IST is a fully accredited International Baccalaureate School offering the Primary Years Programme at Elementary level and the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme at Secondary level. Ninety-five per cent of IST graduates go on to higher education. The school year begins in mid August, ends in mid June and consists of four terms.
There is an extensive afternoon activities programme offering sports, art and crafts, music, computers, field trips and community service. IST is located on two campuses (Elementary and Secondary). Facilities include 80 classrooms, two auditoriums, two infirmaries, two gymnasia, two playing fields, two swimming pools, seven science labs, five computer labs, two libraries, an AV theatre, a purpose-built studio theatre, an administration block and a music and drama complex.
