Learning Support Programme
Taipei American School is an independent college-preparatory coeducational day school that enrolls 2, 200 students from more than 30 countries in K-12. Founded in 1949, TAS offers a strong American-based education with a global perspective that prepares all students academically and ethically for success at university and in life in a rapidly changing world. The school has three divisions: lower school (K-5) with 780 students; middle school (6-8) with 550students; and upper school (9-12) with 870 students.
The school’s 1: 1 laptop initiative assures that middle and upper school students benefit from the latest technology and innovation in their learning. A music program, as well as theater, dance, visual arts, debate, athletics, and physical education programs, complement the rigorous academic offerings available throughout the school.
ESL immersion is offered for students who have sufficient English skills to benefit from our programs with ESL support. Mandarin is taught to all Lower School students. The Middle School is an innovative model program that assists middle school students to grow socially, emotionally, academically, and morally.
In the Upper School 21 AP courses are offered in addition to the full IB Diploma program. Thirteen counselors, two full-time psychologists, and fourteen learning support faculty assure that all students receive the support needed to succeed. A highly specialized college placement office guides students through the college process with sensitivity and success.
TAS moved to its present location in Tien Mu in 1989. The current facility is a modern four-story complex with 152 classrooms, extensive library and multimedia facilities, multiple computer labs, two auditoriums, three gymnasiums, a swimming pool, athletic fields and track, two outdoor tennis courts and an indoor tennis/multipurpose facility. Facilities development work that began in the summer of 2009 will add 31% more instructional space by the Fall of 2011, including a new Upper School classroom building featuring a Science and Technology Center, a new athletic facility, expansion of the cafeteria and fine arts areas, and renovations of existing buildings as improved instructional spaces for the lower and middle schools.
