Founded in 1889, the Institut auf dem Rosenberg, is a private, co-educational boarding school in St Gallen, a city of 70, 000 inhabitants in close proximity to Germany and Austria. Located in a residential area, the Institut offers a scenic view of the city of St Gallen, the Alps and Lake Constance. The school grounds covering 25 acres include a soccer field, tennis courts and other sports areas. Fifteen buildings encompass administration, housing, classrooms, laboratories, libraries, a cafeteria, music and art rooms, and a dining hall.
The school's educational aim is expressed in the words of Heinrich Pestalozzi: "To learn to live is the goal of all education. " For over a century thousands of young people have been prepared for their personal life based on these ideals.
The school comprises four independent educational systems with three languages of instruction: International Section, following either a college-preparatory program leading to an American High School Diploma or preparing for the British IGCSE or GCE A-level examinations. As a supplement to the American High School Diploma, a variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses are available should students want to pursue a more demanding program or fulfill requirements for European or British universities. Additional classes in English, as well as a Bridge or EAL program, are provided for students whose English is not yet at the required standard. Approximately 90% of the graduates attend four-year university programs.
Teachers are qualified with BA, MA or equivalent credentials. The academic year is divided into two semesters between early September and late June. Supervised excursions and sports activities, including winter ski-trips to well-known ski resorts, are regularly organized. Various extra-curricular activity programs are available to all students, but participation is mandatory for students aged 16 and under. Summer language courses are offered in July and August in Switzerland and Austria.
Applications for admission must include copies of previous academic records and a recommendation from the Head and the English teacher of their last school. A personal interview is desirable.
