Founded in 1997 as the International High School Belgrade (IHSB), the British International School (BIS) has over the years experienced great development. The school is now located in two campuses (primary and secondary) both in the quiet residential area of Dedinje largely populated by expatriate families. The campuses provide plenty of outdoor play areas for students of all ages. Secondary students have access to a fully-functioning science laboratory. Both Primary and Secondary students enjoy four separate computer laboratories with digital projectors as well as two large libraries.
As IHSB, British International School was the first International School in Serbia to be awarded International Centre status by Cambridge University for the IGCSE and A-level programmes. It is recognized in the US as a High School and by the UK Department for Children, Schools and Families as an Overseas School. BIS uses the Cambridge University International Curriculum for IGCSEs and A-levels in conjunction with the diploma of the University of Nebraska, where required by certain students.
BIS supports a range of international university entrance examinations and pathways. An English as a Second Language programme is offered to students who require these special tutorial classes. BIS is an Educational Testing Service recognized High School, number 799001.
The Primary department provides British National Curriculum to Reception and Key Stage 1 students. Students in Key Stage 2 study the accredited Cambridge Primary Programme. Children have access to high-quality resources and professionally trained UK teaching staff.
The Secondary school provides an enriched British National Curriculum for students in Key Stage 3.
BIS is governed by a Board of Directors. The faculty members are highly qualified and, with the many positive developments in Belgrade, are increasingly being recruited from international locations. The school actively promotes family involvement, where appropriate, utilizing parental skills in the classrooms.
BIS is the only authorized Duke of Edinburgh Award centre in the Balkans. This prestigious award offers students recognition for personal development, community service and expedition completion.
Although there is no entry examination, students must be able to prove a required fluency of English suitable to their course requirements. ESL provision is available where appropriate.
