"CAISL is a student-centered educational community in which we challenge ourselves and each other to do our best and to make positive contributions to our diverse and ever-changing world. "
--CAISL Mission Statement
The Carlucci American International School of Lisbon (CAISL), founded in 1956, is a non-profit, non-denominational, co-educational day school that offers an American program of study to approximately 550 students from Early Childhood (age three) through Grade 12 (approximately age 18). CAISL is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the Council of International Schools (CIS), and is licensed by the Portuguese Ministry of Education (ME). CAISL is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and offers the IB Diploma Program for the last two years of High School. CAISL is the only school in Portugal with sponsorship from the US Department of State.
All students who complete CAISL’s graduation requirements earn an American High School Diploma. Additionally, those who fulfill the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program requirements, earn an IB Diploma. CAISL graduates are eligible to apply for entrance into universities around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Portugal.
Of the 67 faculty members, 52% are American, 27% Portuguese and 21% are other nationalities. 31% of the faculty hold advanced (postgraduate) degrees. Of the student population, 22% are American, 27% Portuguese, and the remaining 21% represent 29 other nationalities.
CAISL’s curriculum provides an enriching, varied and effective program of Academics, Arts and Athletics. Learning support services are provided for those who need it, as is instruction in English as a Second Language. Extracurricular activities include Iberian Model United Nations (IMUN), yearbook, drama, orchestra, choir, and community service. Boys’ and girls’ team sports are offered for soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross country, and track and field.
Initial evaluation of admissions is based upon records from previous schools and CAISL’s ability to offer a program appropriate to the needs of the applicant.
