English language preparation for Foundation Year


University of Otago Language Centre New Zealand

The University of Otago Language Centre is internationally recognised for the quality of its teaching and research and its diverse international study body. The Language Centre offers English language preparation for Foundation Year, further academic study at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and for everyday communication.



Courses include general English, English for Academic Purposes, preparation for IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC examinations, English for Groups, English for Specific Purposes, and English for entry into undergraduate programmes at Otago.



The centre offers four terms of 10 to 13 weeks duration. Students may enrol at any time. Students are taught in class sizes of up to 15 students. Placement tests on arrival ensure that students are with students of similar ability. The Language Centre offers 5 levels of English tuition from elementary to advanced. Students are taught for 22.5 hours per week including supervised independent learning and activities.



The Language Centre welcomes over 250 students per year from up to 25 countries including Vietnam, Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Chile, Russia, Germany, and Samoa.



Facilities



Teachers use the latest teaching technologies and students have full access to our Sony multimedia language lab, Mackintosh computer suite and independent learning centre.



Students have access to all University of Otago resources including laboratories, computer suites, libraries, gymnasiums, lecture theatres, clubs and societies, recreation and health services. 



Services



Student Services provide professional support on personal issues, academic concerns, an online visa service, and advice on accommodation options. An accommodation service is on site to place students in a number of excellent home-stays options.



Activities



Weekly sporting and social activities enable students to meet other international students and New Zealanders. Activities include visits to Queenstown, Fiordland, and Central Otago, visiting a chocolate factory, wildlife reserves, farms, museums, sporting events and activities such as skiing, horse riding, ice-skating, art classes and golf.

Tuition fee $385 per week


This includes pre testing on arrival, 22.5 hours of classroom tuition per week, seven hours of supervised independent learning, a University of Otago Certificate of Attendance, and an ID card providing access to university services and facilities.
