Mombasa International School was founded in September 1997 to provide an English medium, multi-cultural education based on the framework of the English National Curriculum. The school is open to all children who will benefit from its holistic approach where the aims are to provide for the academic, aesthetic, creative and social fulfillment of the child as an individual.
Mombasa International School is situated just a short distance from the main residential areas of Mombasa, sited close to the north coast beaches and away from the main highway. The school has developed an eight-acre 'garden' site with classrooms set in lawned areas planted with palm trees and shrubs. The school welcomes children of all nationalities and cultures.
The Mombasa International School site, accommodating separate primary and secondary sections, has a swimming pool, tennis courts/multi-sports area and playing fields accessible to both sections of the school. The primary curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum, which has been adapted to meet the needs of both the 'international' and 'internationally minded' school community based in Mombasa. The primary classes are taught by a combination of classroom teacher and subject specialist who provide Kiswahili, ICT, PE, swimming, music and French. Throughout the primary section there is an emphasis on hands-on, activity based learning. The primary section uses a variety of assessment techniques to assess student progress, including standardized tests in English and mathematics. MIS provides good ICT facilities and resources with computers in all primary classrooms, in addition to a well-equipped laboratory serviced by a digital lease line.
In September 2000 the secondary section moved to purpose-built accommodation offering two science laboratories, computer laboratory, library, art room plus general subject rooms. Class provision is currently to Year 11 where students follow a CIE IGCSE course of study. The secondary section will expand into Year 12 in September 2004.
Throughout the Mombasa International School classes are small. Staff are recruited both locally and from overseas. Sports currently include swimming, football netball, hockey, basketball, athletics, cricket, squash and tennis. There is an extensive extra curricula programme and an expanding community service programme with considerable interaction with other schools in Mombasa and Nairobi. MIS operates a daily bus service.
