The British School of Brussels The school was founded in 1969 and has a beautiful campus of 20 hectares,
surrounded by woodland and lakes near the Royal Museum of Central Africa
at Tervuren, some 20 minutes by car from central Brussels. The school
is a coeducational non-selective day school for students from 3 to 18
years of age, with 1, 100 currently on roll of which 160 are in the sixth
form. Seventy-two per cent of the students are British and there are 64
other nationalities represented in the school. In September 1999 the school
opened its own crèche, Kindercib, for 1-3 year olds and a new purpose-designed
Infant Section was opened in September 2001. The UK curriculum is offered
within a European context with courses leading to GCSE examinations at
16 years old and GCE A levels as well as vocational qualifications
in Business and Travel & Tourism. Provision is also made for Oxbridge
tuition. French is taught from the age of five and German from age eleven.
There is an Educational Psychologist and a Learning Support Department
as well as two counsellors. Hosting can be arranged for senior students
who may need to board on a short-term basis. The school is very well equipped. The modern buildings include a science
and maths centre, networked IT suites all with internet access, a modern
languages department, dance and drama studios as well as an art and technology
block and a self-service cafeteria. The extensive sports facilities and
the Arts Centre with its 240 seat auditorium makek the school a focal
point for the local community. A wide range of sports is offered, including
rugby, soccer, hockey, tennis, gymnastics, athletics and basketball and
the school participates successfully in the International School Sports
Tournaments. Similarly there is a wide range of extracurricular activities
in sport, music and drama and there are numerous opportunities for overseas
travel and school journeys. Advice on higher and further education and on choice of career is available
to all students with guest speakers from various walks of life invited
to the school each year during Careers Week.
