The
School of Occupational Therapy was established in 1961. Foreseeing the
demand for specialist professional services in both clinical practice
and research, it has been offering postgraduate programs since 1976. The School’s reputation for excellence is recognised
throughout Australia and in many other countries by the ready employment
of graduates, links with industry and clinical practice, and the
increasing enrolment of overseas tudents in graduate research programs.
Key within the School’s educational approach is student responsibility
for learning as the foundation for the lifelong learning and problem
solving necessary for a practising professional. Staff with doctoral
qualifications are available for graduate supervision in a range of
areas. These programs are supported by key research groups in the areas
of industry, occupational science and occupational adjustment; aged
care; fatigue management; international disability education; families,
children and quality of life; and ergonomics, biomechanics and ICT.
The School offers
innovative postgraduate programs for practicing occupational therapists
who want to upgrade their skills and for graduates of other health
disciplines wishing to prepare for occupational therapy practice. These
include the professional Master of Clinical Science, providing
multidisciplinary clinical practice in one of five specialist streams.
The theory and advanced practice skills training are supported by
evaluation, research and clinical reasoning study that is common to all
streams. The graduate entry Masters program was developed in response to
professional and community need and provides another avenue to satisfy
the demand for local and international occupational therapy services.

The Master of
Forensic Sexology was offered for the first time in 2003, providing a
specialist program in legal issues and sexuality and in the prevention
and treatment of
anti-social and criminal sexual
behaviour. This unique course offers an emphasis on ethical practice and
on providing practical assistance to perpetrators, victims, survivors
and society. The research emphasis is on discovering causes and seeking
preventative strategies. A Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Sexology is
also available and there is the possibility of undertaking research
degrees in the field of sexology and forensic sexology.
The Department of
Podiatry offers postgraduate programs, that broaden the scope of
podiatric practice to a level where podiatrists can move into areas of
specialisation. A strong research culture supports the growing need for
evidence-based practice and scholarly endeavour in both physiotherapy
and podiatry.
The School has
available Macintosh and IBM compatible computing facilities with
specialised software in such areas as human factors. It also has a
Kin-Com dynamometer, human movement analysis and exercise performance
systems, electromyography units, telemetric electrocardiograph units, a
treadmill, a gas analysis system, an anatomy
laboratory, access
to an environmental chamber and excellent technical assistance. The
Department of Podiatry operates its own clinic on the Bentley campus,
which is open to the public.

The School of
Physiotherapy is one of the oldest learning centres in the Division of
Health Sciences. In 2002, after 30 years in the grounds of Royal Perth
(Rehabilitation) Hospital in Shenton Park, the School and the Department
of Podiatry moved to a new purpose-designed building on Curtin’s
Bentley campus. It continues to one of only seven schools in Australia
accredited by the Australian Council of Physiotherapy Regulating
Authorities (ACOPRA). The School offers a range of postgraduate programs
throughinnovative course
delivery to meet the range of student demand for both general and
specialist practice. One such program is the Master of Physiotherapy,
which offers an entry point to the physiotherapy profession for those
with an undergraduate degree in health sciences. Another is the
professional Masters portfolio from which practicing physiotherapists
and podiatrists may select from four interest areas for advanced skills
training.
