 Student Experience

"I undertook 10 weeks of ELICOS in order to meet the English language requirements of the University. The course was relaxed and friendly and was a great foundation for my further studies, not forgetting to mention that I met lots of friends in the classes. I chose to undertake my Masters in Biological science by research because I prefer the structure to that of coursework. In China I have had limited research experience in the Biotechnology of flower cultivation and my studies here are giving me wider understanding of molecular biology and genetics."

Hua Su, Masters of Biological Science (Research), PRC

"I like the University of Newcastle because there are not that many distractions from my studies and the bushland setting means there are lots of places for me to study and relax. The courses are very engaging and the lecturers and tutors are always involving me in the class discussions. They really encourage me to learn about the intricacies of the Australian strands of my course. Public Relations is a very international course and will allow me to work anywhere in the world. I would love to get a job in Australia in entertainment and sports PR."

Patricia Udoto, Bachelor of Communications (Public Relations), Kenya

"I love life in Newcastle! I have a great balance in my lifestyle. I am currently paying US$43 a week to live in a great place overlooking the beach! Newcastle is the perfect nucleation point for travel; I can fit in trips up and down the coast between studies with ease. Sydney is only a short trip by train. I'm so amazed by the level of entertainment that such a relatively small city like Newcastle can produce. There are always huge international acts here, and they play in quite small venues. The nightlife, local music, huge variety of activities, and beaches Perfect!!"

Henry Hansch III, Master of Business Administration, USA New Jersey

Living in Newcastle

A lively port city on a breathtaking stretch of Australia's coastline, Newcastle boasts wonderful beaches, a low cost of living, a very favourable climate, a casual lifestyle, and it's not far from Sydney, the capital of the state of New South Wales.

Its population of 350,000 supports a thriving business and commercial sector and an excellent network of leading healthcare and educational facilities. Newcastle offers all the usual city attractions, such as restaurants, cafes, parks and gardens, theatres, art galleries, shopping centres and nightclubs.

Newcastle is also a popular tourist destination. It has two airports with regular services to and from Sydney. It is close to the main F3 Freeway to Sydney, a drive that takes about two hours and the railway link to Sydney is excellent.

A few kilometres south of the city is Australia's largest seaboard lake, Lake Macquarie, scene of many national and international sailing events. Less than one hour's drive to the north is the impressive harbour of Port Stephens, a popular centre for big game fishing, sailing, surfing, and sailboarding. To the west are the internationally famous wineries of the Hunter Valley, many of them more than a century old. And to the south is the beauty and beaches of the Central Coast.
